Joomla has become one of the best-loved Content Management Systems (CMS) out there over the past fifteen years. This is in no small part thanks to its open-source nature and the strong support it enjoys as a result. Joomla is an excellent way to power and manage websites, requiring little knowledge to handle the basic features. However, once you’ve made your website, the next important step is to make people aware of your website. This means that you need a good understanding of Joomla SEO.

The Basics Of Joomla SEO

  • One of the most important things you can do to improve your rankings in search engines is to ensure there are no links with 404 errors on your site. While search engine spiders are indexing, they register these errors and mark your website down. Search engines consider broken links within your site that show a 404 error. A 404 error infers a broken link. This is deem an issue, as it causes problems for users navigating your website. Hunting these links down and repairing by way of 301 redirect will vastly improve your rankings.
  • Turn on SEF URLs in Joomla’s configuration! These search engine friendly URLs will, again, improve the ability of search engines to index your pages correctly.
  • Watch out for duplicate URLs – if you’ve got one page that appears twice, with identical content, this gives search engines a puzzle in deciding which of the two pages to push higher. Joomla can give you duplicate URLs in multiple ways; it may still generate non-SEF links once SEF links are activated. Also, if your website exists with and without ‘www.’ preceding it, that means every page on it has a duplicate URL.
  • Duplicate URLs can be created accidentally in Joomla via drop-down menu use. By default, a drop-down menu creates a new link to that content (a new URL) in a directory of its own, so if a page features in two drop-down menus, both the original and a second URL will be created. When this would happen, use a Menu Item Alias instead so that it links to the same URL.
  • Canonical page tags are important; these tell the indexing crawlers which version of a duplicate page is the ‘correct’ one and that they can discard the other. ‘Vanilla’ Joomla has in the past had intermittent issues with canonical tags; you may find that an extension designed for this gives you more peace of mind. There are a great many to choose from; browse the user reviews to make sure the one you choose is one of the best.
  • Where all else has failed, Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) will help you clean up any stray duplicates that may have somehow slipped through the net.
